The Arm of Wales

The Llŷn Peninsula (pronounced Hleen) extends 30 miles west from Porthmadog into the Irish Sea, narrowing to a rocky tip at Aberdaron with Bardsey Island floating in the sea beyond. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the peninsula is one of the most distinctly Welsh parts of Wales: Welsh is the everyday language of most of its communities, and the landscape of small fields, ancient holy wells, hilltop chapels and quiet coves feels genuinely remote from the modern world.

Bardsey Island

Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli — Island of the Currents) at the western tip of the peninsula was a major medieval pilgrimage destination, said to be the burial place of 20,000 saints. Today the island is a nature reserve and bird observatory, supporting large seabird colonies and a spectacular grey seal population. Boat trips from Aberdaron in summer provide access; accommodation in the island’s farmhouse is available for longer stays.

Abersoch

The most popular resort on the Llŷn, Abersoch on the south coast is a busy sailing and beach town with good restaurants and a lively summer atmosphere. Its two beaches are excellent; the town gets crowded in August.

Whistling Sands (Porth Oer)

On the north coast near Aberdaron, Whistling Sands is named for the squeaking sound the sand makes underfoot. A beautiful, sheltered cove managed by the National Trust, accessible by a short walk from the car park. One of the finest small beaches in Wales.

Getting Around

A car is essential for exploring the Llŷn properly. Most of the peninsula’s villages are on narrow lanes with infrequent public transport. The A499 from Porthmadog to Pwllheli is the main spine road; from Pwllheli you can explore north to Nefyn or west to Aberdaron.
